2008-2009 Top 10 Point Guards: Week 3
-
It’s been a few weeks since the season has started and it’s time to take our first look back at the top ten list of point guards. The following is the original list, in order, with notes on each particular player:
1. Chris Paul – New Orleans Hornets – 2008 Stats: 21.1 PPG, 11.6 APG – 2009 Stats: 22.6 PPG, 11.9 APG – Well the case is clear. He has broken every record one at a time in this young season. He has scored at least 20 points and racked up at least 10 assists in every game so far this season. By doing it in all seven games he has set the record for the best start to a season for a point guard by passing Oscar Robertson’s past record.
2. Deron Williams – Utah Jazz – 2008 Stats: 18.8 PPG, 10.5 APG – 2009 Stats: 7.5 PPG, 8 APG – It is quite unfortunate that we haven’t yet had the opportunity to see Deron Williams play all out. He has missed the majority of Utah’s games due to injury and has only been able to participate in two games. He is clearly taking it easy as he looks to find his groove on the offense after missing most of the games and practices thus far. He is averaging only 32 minutes per game and his shot is way off making only four out of 15 shots. Let’s hope his stroke improves or else this list may be fatal from the #2 spot!
3. Steve Nash – Phoenix Suns – 2008 Stats: 16.9 PPG, 11.1 APG – 2009 Stats: 13.3 PPG, 7.4 APG – Nash is another point guard whose production has considerably dropped this season. With the Suns fighting hard to stay afloat in the crazy Western Conference, Nash’s production has dropped from last year. It is quite obvious that the Phoenix offense has slowed down and is a lot more structured in comparison to the previous offense, without Shaq playing center. He is playing about two minutes less than last season so there isn’t too much backing him up in not maintaining higher numbers. His excuse… Shaq.
4. Baron Davis – Los Angeles Clippers – 2008 Stats: 21.8 PPG, 7.6 APG – 2009 Stats: 15 PPG, 7.6 APG – New city, new team, new fans, new offense. How has Davis done in it so far? Well, the team is 1-7 and has been blown out several times already. Is he contributing, of course. Is he the reason they aren’t winning? I don’t think so. I have a feeling this team will eventually get going but missing a guy like Marcus Camby and being new to Mike Dunleavy’s offense is a good enough reason for his numbers to drop. I have no doubt in my mind that if he was still in Golden State playing with the guys he knows so well, his numbers would be higher than what they are today. It is important to piont out that his shooting is pathetic though. Also of note, his turnover numbers are down which could prove to help once the offense gets flowing later in the season.
5. Chauncey Billups – Detroit Pistons/Denver Nuggets – 2008 Stats: 17 PPG, 6.8 APG – 2009 Stats: 14.4 PPG, 6.6 APG – Recently involved in a blockbuster trade that has sent him out of Detroit, Billups is now playing in front of his hometown crowd in Denver. It will take him some time to adjust playing with a star like Carmelo Anthony, but I have no doubts that he will succeed. He is a great point guard and will only continue to grow in George Karl’s offense. Since Billups has joined the Nuggets, his point total has increased by over three points and his assist number have slightly dropped. This is not really a surprise and I expect for his numbers to sky rocket in the coming weeks as well as I think he is a great fit in the Nuggets offense.
6. Tony Parker – San Antonio Spurs – 2008 Stats: 18.8 PPG, 6 APG – 2009 Stats: 27.4 PPG, 5.8 APG – Tony Parker has played absolutely brilliantly so far this season. The unfortunate part of that statement is the, “so far.” He has only played in five games and has gone down with an ankle injury. Parker is expected to miss about a month. At the rate the Spurs are currenlty going, they will be lucky if they even have a chance to compete for the number eight spot for the playoffs. With the injury to Manu Ginobli keeping him out of the lineup thus far this season, Tim Duncan has picked up the entire load on his own and has been brilliant. Parker was playing great until he went down, and this team can’t wait to get him back. I expect that his averages will drop slightly when Manu returns as he will finally have to share the ball.
7. Jason Kidd – Dallas Mavericks – 2008 Stats: 10.8 PPG, 10.1 APG – 2009 Stats: 11.3 PPG, 9 APG – It’s been an entire training camp and preseason that jason Kidd has played with the Dallas Mavericks and his numbers still aren’t very appealing. I gave him the benefit of the doubt early in the season thinkign that he would eventually prove his worth to Mark Cuban and lead the Mavs to a few wins. It’s sad to say, but he really hasn’t done his job so far. It will be interesting to see if Rick Carlisle changes things up with the offense and finally gets this team to actually win big games.
8. Mo Williams – Cleveland Cavaliers – 2008 Stats: 17.2 PPG, 6.3 APG – 2009 Stats: 14.4 PPG, 4.9 APG – Well, I was wrong about this one. I thought that the Cavs really needed a point guard and Williams really needed someone to pass to. Apparently, neither needed each other. Mo Williams has helped the Cavs get off to a decent start at 7-2 but not by dishing the ball. He is a great shooter and complements Lebron James pretty well. Unfortunately, with Lebron James commanding so much time with the ball, Williams production has decreased. I still feel that it’s early in the season to call it a bust, but I am interested to see how things work out in Cleveland.
9. Jose Calderon – Toronto Raptors – 2008 Stats: 11.2 PPG, 8.3 APG – 2009 Stats: 13.5 PPG, 9 APG – Calderon is playing even better than he did last year, which was a great year for him to say the least. The loss of TJ Ford and addition of Jermaine O’Neal has been really good for Calderon as he has become the #1 option at point guard and now has command of this team. With Bosh and O’Neal clogging the paint, throwing the ball into the post is easier than ever. And guess what? With two bigs posting up on either side of the basket, the defense is forced to collapse and eventually one of the forwards or guards is left open for an easy basket. Calderon is a great shooter and I expect for his season stats to be very strong.
10. Devin Harris – New Jersey Nets – 2008 Stats: 14.8 PPG, 5.8 APG – 2009 Stats: 18.8 PPG, 4.8 APG – Harris has found a way to be productive in New Jersey. The solution, shooting. His field goal percentage is pretty high reaching about 40%, however his three point field goal percentage is a staggering 0%. Yes, thats right, 0%. He is 0-7 from behind the arc and I’m not sure that he will ever hit a long jumper again. From a real standpoint though, i expect to see Harris and Yi to build a great relationship in New Jersey and potentially start creating some strong offense. Yi is a strong post up player that has a chance to make a big impact this season with New Jersey. As this is Harris’ fifth year in the league and first full season with the Nets, I am sure that as time passes, his numbers will continue to grow and he will develop a strong bond with his teammates.
