Bad Call? I Think Not…
-

In last nights game between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Golden State Warriors there was plenty of complaining from both sides. The Warriors stole the first game of the home and home set on Sunday at the Staples Center and the Lakers were prepared to battle in Oakland last night. The Warriors came out strong, again, took an 11 point lead at halftime, and again, managed to blow the lead in the 3rd quarter. Warriors fans have decided that this game was decided by a last second negotiable call by referee Bob Delaney.
For the second night in a row, a great basketball game ended in the most unexpected way. The first game was capped off by Stephen Jackson taking a shot from way beyond the arc and nailing it to secure the victory. This time around, Fisher and Odom took over to bring the Lakers ahead in overtime. Lamar Odom has finally grown into a dominant player in a Lakers jersey. He has finally done a great job to find his role on this team and his recent outbursts of 20+ points and 20+ rebounds has been amazing. Last nights line of 23 points, 21 rebounds, 5 blocks, and 5 assists and 2 steals made some fantasy owners quite happy.
After being subjected to watching the NBA TV broadcast of the game, I became so furious that I couldn’t believe the Lakers had won. I usually only get this mad if they lose…
The game ended on a questionable call against Monta Ellis with 4 seconds remaining in overtime. The Lakers were ahead by 2 in the extra time, after being behind by 11 at halftime, and were playing man to man defense against the Warriors. Baron Davis set a strong pick in which he is clearly holding on to Kobe Bryant so that he can’t go anywhere and essentially setting a screen for the actual clutch shooter of the night, Monta Ellis. Monta was being guarded by Derek Fisher and as Fisher attempted to stay in front of his man while back peddling, Ellis bulldozed him at full speed. Although Fishers hands were wrapped around Ellis, it is clear that he did not pull him down. Perhaps it is time that analysts look at the big picture and not just the portion that is controversial. As the NBA TV commentator said last night, he has never seen a game decided by such a horrible call. Let me just say that man is an idiot.
Derek Fisher was in no position to “pull” Ellis down because that strength comes from your legs, the same legs that were stuck in between Ellis’ legs that caused him to lose his balance with the slight shove from Monta. The game was incredible throughout but I can’t stand to hear people complaining about losing a game due to one call. Even if the inbounds pass had gone through, the Warriors still had to make the shot, and lets assume the person that takes the shot is one of the 5 guys on the floor at the time, well, the Warriors shot a combined 43% from the field last night, so they had about a 40-50% chance of making the shot. Had Monta Ellis been freed up to take the shot, be my guest, he was already 7 for 20 last night, let him blow the game on his own.
CLARIFICATION: I DO NOT SUPPORT THE CALL MADE AT THE END OF THE GAME. I BELIEVE A NO CALL WOULD’VE BEEN BETTER OR A DOUBLE FOUL TO ALLOW PLAY TO RESUME.
Golden State Warrior’s fans are obviously some of the most dedicated fans in the NBA. They are also respectful and deserve lots of credit; at least they didn’t throw a beer on the court and boo Derek Fisher like the Utah Jazz folks did last week. The unfortunate thing is that the Warriors fans have obviously forgotten how many calls they got away with throughout the game prior to the final play. Al Harrington, Stephen Jackson, and Baron Davis are the three guys that tend to get away with a bunch of offensive fouls. I’m wondering if its Don Nelson thats teaching these guys how to get away with calls, but for some reason, these three players continuously use their off hand to push the defender off of them, they take a step back, and end up getting a wide open shots. Trust me, it’s not because these three happen to be the three best players in the NBA at creating an open look, it’s simply because of the off arm that they use every possession.
By the way, I’m not even going to bother mentioning the offensive foul where Baron Davis ran straight through Kobe busting his face open with a cut below his left eye that was bleeding throughout the night. Not only was there not a call against Davis, but the blocking foul went against Kobe… that makes a lot of sense. There you go Warriors fans, there are your 2 points… enjoy your loss either way!The Lakers are moving on with life and are prepared to battle for the remainder of the season. They are currently sitting atop the Western Conference with a 1/2 game lead over the New Orleans Hornets with what is definitely the easiest remaining schedule in the conference. Hopefully with the return of Pau Gasol this week, and Andrew Bynum in the next few weeks, the Lakers will show how dominant they truly are with a full lineup.

kobe slid into that blocking call just like dfish slides into every “charge” he takes every game. the end call shoulda been a double-foul, replay the damn thing… fisher was holding on to monta, monta’s momentum made fisher fall — its that simple.

Dude-
You sound like as much of a cry baby as Kobe himself. According to Kobe, he’s fouled everytime he touches the ball. I cannot stand to watch the guy, he’s the biggest whiner in the NBA, no doubt a great player but who besides you and the rest of you dumb a#@!es down in LALA land would give the guy the time of day. R u kidding me? Your whole lousy article sound like maybe you and Kobe sat down together and wrote it. If you think that was not a foul you must have your head straight up you a#@!. I won’t waste my time w/ you with a long response. All I can say is the Lakers WILL be last years Mavericks. See you in the first round and can’t wait to hear from you and Kobe crying…again after the 1st round!
Eat S@#t.

Bad call? I think so…..
March 25th, 2008 at 3:52 pm
Just thought I’d point something out while we’re at it. I’m not a complainer, because if you read my past articles, I’ve admitted when the Lakers lost games based on their play and not bad calls. Bad calls don’t make the game, giving away a 26 point lead one night and an 11 point lead the next night do. I don’t understand why this article is so controversial. I feel that the game was great and all the players put their heart and soul out their for the fans. I’m glad to see that fans are looking forward to the first round matchup, but let’s not forget, the Lakers are still missing their #2 and #3 scoring options… I welcome any and all comments!!

You don’t see why it’s controversial? You’re saying that we aren’t strong enough to pull down a little runt like Monta? WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE
We are Fisher’s hands. We make the ball go into the basket, not those hairless she-sticks Fisher calls his legs. Damn right we’re strong enough to pull Monta to the ground AND YOU BETTER RECOGNIZE THAT WE DID.
KOBE’S FOREHEAD AINT GOT NOTHING ON US
March 25th, 2008 at 4:09 pm
that was the most BS call…you can guarantee dfish gets booed like hell next time he comes to oracle..
and bob delaney shouldnt ref a warriors game ever again

To bad you don’t need to have qualification to have a blog. Keep the comentary to someone who knows something about basketball.

I think you haters are idiots.
KOBE IS MVP. GREAT ARTICLE, BAD FUCKING CALL!
March 25th, 2008 at 4:19 pm
stop hating and get some players that play fair… you warriors fans complain too much, the lakers have put up with plenty garbage over the years, how does it feel? look at kobe’s face, how is he going to come home lookin like that? thanx a lot baron!
March 25th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
Lakers fans complaining about playing fair? Right, when Kobe gets to bring his own traveling refs and gets at least 6-7 superstar calls a night.
And ‘S’, Warrior fans are the idiots… bad call?! You mean the one that actually went against the Warriors and gave you the win*? Go ahead and take solace in the fact you won this game with an official in your back pocket. DFish is a flopping bitch and he’ll get his.

The only thing that saddens me is that for the first time in my life i felt like i waisted 3 hours of my life watching a basketball game. Well…maybe the second, i felt kind of similar after the spurs and suns playoff game last year…Don’t care who’s fan you are, it was an absolutely great game to watch, momentum back and forth, and to end it like that is just SAD. I’ll admit im a warriors fan, and get absolutely furious when they lose, but the problem this time was that i was sad. If baron had launched a half court shot and the warriors had lost, i would’ve been mad but at least had the satisfaction of knowing that the warriors lost the game and the lakers won it (trust me, actual old time warrior fans can take a loss after a 14 year playoff drought). It was like watching a really great suspense thriller and being left without a climax. After two of the last three games between the teams basically being decided on the last shot….taking that away from this game, the last game of the series, was absolutely saddening. Doesnt matter if you live in oakland of LA, both sides were left without a climax, at the risk of sounding repetitive, only one word to explain it…SADDENING!!!

what makes it worse is we have ppl discussing the technicalities….It doesnt matter if fisher’s hands are STRONG ENOUGH??(LOL by the way, monte is like 90 lbs) It doesnt matter how the situation came about….What matters is that a 48 + 5 = 53 min. grueling game came down to 4 seconds, and the players were not given a chance to decide the outcome. How can u say this…”As the NBA TV commentator said last night, he has never seen a game decided by such a horrible call. Let me just say that man is an idiot”…. horrendous comment! The only ppl that will not agree with the commentator here are ppl who only care about outcome and not the game itself, might as well just go to nba.com and see the outcome of the game rather than enjoying its drama. The point is that the fans were denied the climax of the game, and not just that… the series. I’m a warriors fan, but in my opinions laker fans should be equally furious at the call!!!! Like i said in my earlier post…BOTH TEAMS WERE LEFT WITHOUT AN OUTCOME!!!!!!!!!!

I, am not happy about the call. I much rather would’ve seen the Warriors get a shot off and either brag about how well the Lakers managed to play defense or be pissed at how easily the defense collapsed. Like I stated before though, I have been through so many of these games that have come down to the wire and no call is made in either direction because the refs are afraid of forcing the outcome of a game by sending someone to the free throw line. I am happy to see that a ref has finally made a call that has been decisive in turning a game around, even though it could have been the wrong call (I think if a foul is to be called on one player, it had to be on Monta, but a double foul would have been more appropriate and I would have been more in favor of that call). It’s sad to me to see a game that went on for 53 minutes not be talked about for the superior displays of defensive sets that each team came up with at certain times, but instead to a decision made by a man wearing zebra stripes.
The comment regarding Kobe getting all start calls, I have to disagree with you. There have been times in the past that Kobe was that “all star that gets calls” but not anymore. That has been handed over to Lebron and Wade, as we all saw in the playoffs in 2006 when Miami won and again in 2007 when Cleveland had a great run. Free throws force the outcome of a game too much today and I’m not for it, so this game may catch the attention of the league and maybe some decision can be made.
In terms of my comment regarding the commentator, I said that I didn’t agree wit his attitude toward the game. The game was decided not by a horrible call, but by a call that was questionable. I care about the outcome, just as you care about the Warriors coming away with a “W” but it is more important to me that I get value out of the game and the sport. The game was incredible and I truly hope Golden State maintains that 8th spot so that the Lakers can meet them in the first round. It will be a real battle of the fans and the series will be one to die for. The Warriors are always a pleasure to watch, especially when they kill the Mavs!!
The Warriors deserve the spot over the Nuggets and I wish them all the best. Last night’s game is history and we can only hope that the league makes all the necessary adjustments for the future of the NBA to be that much better!

I gotta agree with you about the playoff series. I was just thinking the same thing; what a great series it would be!! If nothing else, it’ll give a more definitive and uncontroversial ending to a great one season rivalry….I really hope if the warriors edge out denver then LA is the no.1 seed, and if the warriors even catch up to the dirk-less mavs, i hope the lakers end up no. 2. It’d be a really great series, really fun to watch…..

I’m a fan of both the Lakers and the Warriors (i know, sacrilege!) - from LA, but the Bay is my home. I just have to say that both teams played some gutsy basketball over the last couple of days. Great stuff. That said, the call to end this last game was ridiculously horrible - there should have been no call, or a double foul. Disgusting. Warriors robbed - if they’re gonna lose, let them lose it on their own, not by a bogus call.
(of course, if they weren’t so horrible shooting free throws that game, they might have won regardless)
In terms of Kobe being a whiner, it’s kinda true. But let’s not forget, people, as gutsy and inspiring as Baron Davis is - he’s a big whiner too. I love to watch him, but he is a w-h-i-n-e-r.

Bad Call.
March 27th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
Im with a lot of you on the call… i AM a warrior’s fan, and i respect the Lakers (though i dislike Kobe with a passion) and all their hardwork. ALthough i will give KOBE his dues, since he’s changed A LOT from his shaq/kobe days, when he was more of a ball hog than a team player… at this point i think he’s a very good choice for MVP. (but i still hate him~!)
The call was horrendous… it SHOULD have been a double foul, but the whole game, bad calls were made against the lakers, and against the warriors… there were overall just alot of bad calls… and i would hope, that at the end of this season, those REF’s were reviewed, and fired.
A lot of you were right, THE GAME means a lot… and if that were true, and the END didn’t justify the means… warriors would be undefeated…. (har har har) because the strategy of Don Nelson is amazing. I continue to BELIEVE.
Let’s just hope we see eachother in FINAL ROUNDS… i would prefer not to see GS in 8, and lakers @ 1… only to end BOTH our parades… but if we see achother 3rd round… and both teams have pride, power (the return of bynum and gosol), and a winning streak under their belt… now thats a game i want to see…
March 29th, 2008 at 12:24 am
simply stated… it was a BAD CALL. no justifaction of any sort is needed on how the outcome would’ve been. regardless, it would’ve been a great last few seconds, but the ref Bob Delaney had to f it up…
July 23rd, 2008 at 5:07 pm
it was a bad call and it doesnt matter if you like the lakers or not you guys just go with your dumbass opinions just because you like the warriors
(even though they are garbage compared to the Lakers)
