NBA Trade Deadline Comes With a Bang
-
I awoke this morning to see that the Houston Rockets, New Orleans Hornets, and Memphis Grizzlies were all involved in a three team trade that moved some minor pieces around. The biggest names were Bonzi Wells and Mike James who were sent to New Orleans as well as Bobby Jackson who was sent to Houston. Memphis was only involved with small future players traded here and there.
As I read Chad Ford’s Chat Transcript to follow up with what was going on around the league, there was a new trade, or two, that had surfaced, both involving the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Surely enough, Chad Ford was correct. Just over an hour later, the Cavs have revealed the extent of their trade. The Cavaliers have apparently acquired Ben Wallace and joe Smith from Chicago as well as Wally Sczerbiak and Delonte West from Seattle. The Cavs will be giving away Drew Gooden, Donyell Marshall, Ira Newble, Larry Hughes, Cedric Simmons, and Shannon Brown. The six players that the Cavs are surrendering for the four they are receiving in return seems like a decent trade. You can call it a blockbuster if you wish due to the amount of players involved and the impact that the trade will make for the Cavaliers, but I am not so sure its a good move for Cleveland.
The upside to the trade, the Cavs got rid of Larry Hughes horrible contract. The downside, they have a brand new team with less offensive fire power, although they upgraded their defensive line, with less then half the season to learn how to play together. I see the trade as more of a lateral move for this season, but it may be a good deal for the future. The team will probably go out in the 2nd round of the eastern conference playoffs because the Pistons and Celtics are still superior to the Cavaliers. The west truly seems to be where the action is at, but 40 games in 40 nights has never been this exciting!!

So would you say the Lakers came out on top for the trade deadline?
I would say so……..

Of course, you can check up on the stats at ESPN.com as well, but I think it’s a given that the Lakers had the best trade of the season. They went from potential contenders to league-wide favorites. The Suns, Spurs, and Mavs all simply improved there already competitive teams.
