The Los Angeles Lakers have finally taken over the league. The Lakers started the season 7-0 and 14-1 having the least amount of losses in the league.

Things went downhill for a few weeks as the Boston Celtics went on a 19 game winning streak and put together an amazing 27-2 record. The Lakers were the ones who stopped them and the Warriors added another loss the following night to the Celtics loss column.

The Cleveland Cavaliers were the other team in the league with a limited amount of losses. Up until earlier yesterday morning, the Lakers had the third best record in the league as the Celtics and Cavs both shared the same five losses as the Lakers, but both had more wins. Today, things are a bit different.

The schedule of games was simple. The Lakers had the most difficult competition of the day as they face the 20 and 13 Blazers. The Celtics and Cavs meanwhile face the Knicks and Wizards, respectively, who have combined less wins than the Blazers.

Yesterday’s morning started with the Cleveland Cavaliers facing up against the Washington Wizards. Lebron played another big game and came up with 30 points, 6 rebounds, and 10 assists. Mo Williams has proven to be the key to this team’s performance though and with a poor game from Williams, the Wizards defeated the Cavs by 3. The score was 80-77 and the Cavs were held to their lowest scoring game of the season.

The next step was the Boston Celtics facing up against the New York Knicks. It was already an astonishing morning as the Cavs lost to a pathetic Wizards team, so you can only imagine how ecstatic I was to see the Celtics struggle against a slightly less pathetic Knicks. The Celtics ended up going down to the lowly Knicks by a score of 100-88. Paul Pierce had a solid game with 31 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists while Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen are easily to blame for this loss. KG was just 1-6 from the field and Allen was a pathetic 0-9 from 3 point range. When does a guy finally realize he shouldn’t be shooting the three ball anymore?

Either way, with the Celtics and Cavs both having to spend whats left of the weekend in misery, the Lakers had a chance to be the only remaining team with only 5 losses.

The Lakeshow came out on the court, the game was underway, and it quickly looked like the Lakers would be joining the Celtics and Cavs with another loss. As the game progressed however, the Lakers started to look better and better. With an 18-9 deficit early in the game, the men in purple and gold managed to take their first lead just before halftime. With a one point lead to start the second half, the Lakers acted on what coach Phil Jackson instructed them to change in the half and blew the game open.

It has often been the case that the Lakers don’t play tough until the second half and this game was no different. The Lakers outscored the Blazers by 14 points in the 3rd quarter and finished the game with a 100-86 win. The Lakers record improved to 27-5 and left them as the only team with 5 or less losses. Although the Lakers have an extremely difficult schedule in the coming weeks, Boston and Cleveland have their own share of tough competition shortly thereafter.

It’s a great feeling to be able to once again brag about the fact that the Lakers have the fewest losses and are in complete control of their competition. They are finallly beating teams by over 10 points on a regular basis. It truly seems like the theory that the Lakers were only waiting for the Celtics game to really start concentrating on the game itself seems to have truth to it.
