The NBA is looking amazing this season. There are so many incredible games that i can’t ever choose which one to watch, unless of course the Lakers are playing, then it’s obvious.
I wanted to take the time to point out a few interesting facts after only 5 days of the NBA season.
The Lakers sit atop the Western Conference tied with the New Orleans Hornets and Houston Rockets at 3-0. The difference is the point differential in wins between the Lakers and the other two teams. The Lakers have come away with wins of 20 points, 38 points, and 7 points equaling an average winning margin of 21.7 points. The Hornets point margin is 10 and the Rockets are standing at 11.
The Utah Jazz are 2-0 and have an average winning margin of 13 points. These four teams were expected to do extremely well this season and I look forward to seeing how this all ends up breaking open as the season progresses.
Meanwhile, there are also teams that aren’t doing as well as I expected.
Phoenix is holding their own at 2-1. The biggest surprise however is the San Antonio Spurs at 1-2. They have played extremely well and just haven’t been able to seal the deal. Their loss to Portland should’ve been a win as Desmond Mason missed a wide open buzzer beater and their defense was pathetic in the closing minutes. I expect the Spurs to continue and improve this season as they await the return of Manu Ginobli.
Also, the Denver Nuggets have started at 1-2, can’t say it’s that big of a surprise however management does and has made the moves to prove it. Goodbye Allen Iverson, hello Chauncey Billups!
The Clippers are also 0-3. Pathetic. They actually have a solid team on paper, even without Marcus Camby playing. But to have an 18 point lead three games into the season, and lose in overtime is absolutely ridiculous. Not only did they lose, but they lost to an 0-2 team struggling and looking to make a big trade known as the Denver Nuggets.
Meanwhile, the Eastern Conference is looking quite interesting as well.
The Boston Celtics have lost their first game a lot earlier this season than last. The Celtics stand at 2-1 with a loss coming to the new look Indiana Pacers. The Pacers are still not much of a contender, but do stand at 1-1 after beating the defending champs.
The teams that look really good are the 3-0 Raptors with Chris Bosh and Jermaine O’Neal coming together great and the Atlanta Hawks who are still on a role after last years brilliant playoffs performance. After taking the Celtics to seven games, they lost Josh Childress to Europe and are still looking strong in the East. They are playing great and are off to a 2-0 start.
The final team undefeated thus far is the Detroit Pistons, who after today’s big blockbuster trade, are expected to lose at some point in the near future as they look to find their mojo with their newly acquired superstar.
On the other end of the spectrum, I’m surprised to see that the Wizards are the only winless team in the East. They are currently 0-2 and struggling to find their groove. Hopefully it comes soon or else they may not even make the playoffs this season.
The Chicago Bulls are looking consistent and solid at 2-1 while the 76ers and Cavaliers have surprised me. With all the talk about Eastern powers in Philadelphia and Cleveland, the respective teams really haven’t been all that impressive. Lebron James is once again that much talked about stud that has a team with a losing record, at 1-2, and the newly overpaid Elton Brand is leading a 1-2 76ers team. I have no doubt that both of these teams will soon improve to winning records, but starting a season 1-2 isn’t a good sign for a championship contender.
