i wish I had more information to report on this but unfortunately this is all I know:

DJ Mbenga has been re-signed by the Los Angeles Lakers.

Mbenga was a big part of filling the gap at center last season while Andrew Bynum continued his rehabilitation. The Lakers coaching staff worked hard to familiarize Mbenga with the offense but his lack of a shooting touch really proved to be an issue.

By the time the playoffs rolled around, the Lakers and their fans recognized that Mbenga was really nothing more than a strong defender. Defense however wins championships and Mbenga could prove to be an integral part of this Lakers team.

The Lakers now have 19 players under contract heading into training camp. Four players will have to be released prior to the season beginning. My guess is that it’s not all about skill at this time but really on who’s smarter and able to pick up what the Lakers are trying to do better.
